Where We Sustainably Find Our Books

In our home, books are well loved. I have one true bookworm who will read the same story over and over, and two future readers watching closely from the sidelines. While the library is a staple for us, there comes a point where certain stories earn a permanent place on our shelves.

At Made From Dirt, we believe in choosing things slowly, thoughtfully, and with care—for our bodies, our homes, and the earth. Books are no different. Rather than constantly buying new, we’ve found ways to build our home library that align with our values: reuse, community, and sustainability.

Here’s how we find our books.

  1. Used Bookstores

Used bookstores are full of character and charm—just like the stories inside them. These are often our favorite places to browse because every book already has a history.

A friend recently introduced us to Beachtown Books in San Clemente, and it instantly became a favorite. Shelves packed with well-loved stories, cozy corners, and that comforting feeling that comes from slowing down and browsing without an agenda.

  1. Free Little Libraries

Free Little Libraries feel like a beautiful exchange of trust and community. Our kids’ school has one, and we regularly find books there—and just as importantly, return books once we’re done.

It’s a simple way to teach our children about sharing, stewardship, and caring for things beyond ourselves.

  1. Local Library Sales

Our local library offers more than just borrowing. The Friends of the Library store sells gently used books at low prices, with proceeds supporting the library itself.

We love that these purchases directly benefit a community space we value, while also keeping books in circulation rather than landfills.

  1. ThriftBooks (Online)

When we’re searching for a specific title—whether it’s for school, seasonal rhythms, or a favorite we want to keep—we turn to ThriftBooks.

Buying used books online allows us to be intentional without compromising convenience, and it’s a great way to reduce waste while still meeting our family’s needs.

  1. Local Thrift Stores

Before anywhere else, we usually check our local thrift stores. Savers is a regular stop for us, and it’s amazing how often we find beautiful children’s books tucked between dishes and sweaters.

Some of our most treasured stories were unexpected finds.

Just like the products we make at Made From Dirt, the things we bring into our home are chosen with care. Our books are read many times, shared between siblings, and eventually passed along—continuing their story somewhere new.

Slow living. Thoughtful choices. Well-loved things. 🌿📖
